Thinking of getting into running again?

Posted by Pete McBreen Thu, 24 Dec 2015 02:57:29 GMT

This was prompted by an email to the club, but thought it might be useful for other people…

Getting into running is a slow process, and how fast you can progress depends on your current level of fitness, and how active you are. What I normally suggest is first get to the point where you can comfortably do a 30 minute walk three times/week without feeling stiff, sore or any aches and pains. Always finish each walk feeling that you could have done more, and build up slowly if you are not that active currently

Once you have got to that point, increase the pace of your walk so that it is brisk, and you are having to breathe a bit faster than normal, but without pushing too hard. Again, make sure that you could always have done more when you finish your walk.

Now you are ready to start the Couch to 5K

Please note that although this is a 9 week program, the intention is to repeat any week until the week feels relatively easy. It is not about how fast you can progress, it is more about giving your body time to adapt to the stresses of running for the first time in a long time.

And then at the end of March 2016 you will be ready to join in on our 2016 Run To Footstock clinic

Ron Clarke has passed away

Posted by Pete McBreen Wed, 17 Jun 2015 16:35:59 GMT

Australian runner from the 1960’s has passed away he set multiple 5K and 10K distance records in the 1960’s.

As an athlete Clarke was revered not for medals he won but for the fact he changed his sport. He didn’t just break records, he reshaped the entire idea of what was possible: he reduced the 5000m record four times by a total of 18 seconds, the 10,000m three times, by 39 seconds in all. At his peak in 1965 during a 44-day tour of Europe he set 12 world records, nine of them in just 21 days.

MEC Race 2 Results

Posted by Pete McBreen Wed, 15 Apr 2015 15:46:54 GMT

Neil was 5th overall in the 5K, Sierra was 87th. Due to this run being in nosehill park with an out up the steep hill and then back down the times are slower than flat races.

Race profile and splits from Neil’s watch, looks like the hill training is paying off.

1km - 4:20 39m Ascent
2km - 4:41 30m Ascent
3km - 4:43 27m Ascent 12m Descent

Older Runners just get faster …

David Torrence on why race?

Posted by Pete McBreen Sun, 03 Feb 2013 21:21:27 GMT

David Torrence on race motivation

I think so many people in the running community have kind of forgotten that one part about racing. Not to just finish, but to see how fast you can go. And that is helped by the fact that there are other people on the course that are also trying to go fast. But you want to go faster than them. So you end up in these little competitive bubbles on the race course, where you single out people you want to beat…either ones in front of you, or ones you notice behind you chomping at the bit.

And when the end of the race comes, and you can see the finish line in the distance, that sprint for the finish is more intense when you are chasing somebody down or holding somebody off. In those moments you really get to see how hard you can dig.

Lots of choices for those doing what ever distances — 8k, 11K, 15K or stupid long, etc. Can’t get lost because most of the trails loop back… PDF map of trail inside park Entrance off Highway 1A is signposted in both directions.

Glenbow Park accessible from Gleneagles East

Posted by Pete McBreen Fri, 26 Aug 2011 05:27:14 GMT

Now that the new provincial park is open, it can also be accessed off the trails system in Gleneagles East. Easiest access is the path behind the houses in Gleneagles View road – Google Map link. Just head east along the paved path until you see a gravel trail heading off down a hill to the south – that is the back way into the park. Only problem you will face is that the trail drops 120m in about 900m, so while it is nice enough to run down, it is a lot slower to run back up to Gleneagles.

Club Update April 29, 2011

Posted by Member_15 Fri, 29 Apr 2011 16:43:36 GMT

Hello Everyone,

Are we all enjoying the snow?

I have a few things of interest to relay to you.

  1. Martin Parnell aka Mr. Marathon Man is seeking support for another Fun Run that will be raising funds for Right To Play. The Fun Run takes place in Redwood Meadows and will happen May 22 from 1-5pm. Part of all registrations will go to the Right to Play organization. So if you`re not busy on the 22nd, its a Sunday and Redwood Meadows is just a short (25mins) drive south, lets get out and show some support.
  2. Lifestyles Fitness Centre is, once again, presenting their 5X5 Race Series. This is a series of 5km races on 5 consecutive Wednesdays. You can view the information at www.lifestylesfitness.biz .
  3. A note from Paddy Barker.

I won a bib for the ½ Marathon at Footstock from a silent auction for Martin Parnell 250 marathon quest. I won’t be in town that weekend but offer the bib to whoever wants to make a donation Right to Play (in Martin’s name). If anyone is interested in the bib (and making a donation!) please give them my email address pjbarker@shaw.ca.

thanks

Paddy Barker

On that note, thats all I have for now. If anyone has anything they would like to get out to the club, please let me know.

Gerry

Sinister 7 CRRRTC has participated in this event since its first race 3 years ago. The club has entered two teams to participate this year. We are now looking for a number of able bodied people to fill up to 3 positions. The race is a 147km race that spans a time frame of 27 hours on 9 & 10 July. It is held in the beautiful Rocky Mountains in the Crowsnest Pass area. If your interested please contact the Team coordinator Ann at AVLP@shaw.ca for more info. We have participated with at least two teams in the past and everyone involved has had a great time.

Next up is a note about John Clubb and his programs Clubbsport.ca. John has set-up a number of programs geared towards running. He has Learn to Run programs, Kids Programs, and Sports Psychology Programs. If you or anyone you know would be interested give him a shout. He call be reached at johnclubb@aol.co.uk or johnclubb@aim.com.

Finally a quick note about Footstock. This year the event is held on Saturday June 11 and Sunday June 12. Please sign up now for a spot in any of the races. We have a 5km, 10km, ½ Marathon, and a Duathlon for you this year. There are spots still available for all. If you would like to participate but are unable to because of any reason we are also looking for volunteers. Either way contact the Footstock group at Footstock.ca.

Running concurrently with the event is a Race Expo. This is a venue for various small vendors to showcase their wares. If you are interested in setting up a booth please contact myself (Gerry) at [gbabin1010@shaw.ca](mailto:gbabin1010@shaw.ca) and we can see what we can do.

RED ROCK RUNNING AND TRI CLUB P.O. 8010, COCHRANE, AB T4C 2J7

AGM February 3, 2011

Gerry Babin called the meeting to order at 7:15. Thanks to Mark Denton for hosting the AGM at Trail Blazers. All club members are encouraged to show their support of Mark’s store which features excellent outdoor clothing and equipment.

Year in Review: Gerry welcomed all members to the general meeting. Highlights of the year were all positive. Lots of successful runs including marathons, triathlons and endurance runs. The club sponsored Sinister 7 with two teams and one solo runner. Also supported were Footstock Young Runners, Right to Play. The club is extremely proud of the successes of Martin Parnell’s MarathonQuest. Several members ran with him as he conquered his challenge to complete 250 marathons and raise $250,000.00 for Right To Play. Donations are still being accepted in his name.

Programs: The swim program had a rocky start this year with attendance down for the fall. Classes were reduced to one night a week. It seems to be back on track now however and there may be a need for the numbers to be capped! Financial Report: Gerry read the financial report for Lana as she was not available at the AGM. Revenue and expenses were in a negative balance for 2010, however are now showing positive for 2011.

Membership: Toni reported 49 members which is down from previous years. There are currently 15 lifetime members. Sponsorship: Sue advised that most sponsors are expected to return this year. Continued support by members underlines the value of having sponsors for the club. Double check the website to see all of the sponsor names and plan to support these businesses. Events: There were no club sponsored events for 2010 as the club had no extra funds. A potluck was organised for December but had to be cancelled due to lack of interest. It is hoped that more events will be planned for 2011. Other Items: Pete McBreen has recreated the club website. Members are now able to post directly to the site. It is hoped that this will be used to talk about runs, races or triathlons that people have been on or are going on, upload pictures or connect for bike rides. Pete, Ann or Gerry can set up the ID. Please be mindful of protection of privacy when uploading photos.
